Hirst Fares Well with Roth Motorsports at Peter Murphy Classic

4/25/17- This past weekend, Roth Motorsports and driver Kyle Hirst attended the 4th Annual Peter Murphy Classic hosted by the Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare, CA.  The Elk Grove Ford Sprint Car Challenge Tour (SCCT) presented by Abreu Vineyards and the KWS-NARC Fujitsu Racing Series were both on tap for the picture perfect weekend.

Friday night, the SCCT saw 51 sprint cars sign in as the Roth/Hirst duo would qualify 3rd quick out of the 10 in his group. With the format inversion, this would line up Hirst on the outside front row of Heat #5.  On the start, Hirst would take control and never look back as he led every lap to take the checkers.  Adding a different twist to the event, a “Pole Shuffle” would line up the top 12 cars for the 35-lap feature. After a draw for position, Hirst would go out in the first round which lined up his 83 machine in the 9th starting spot for the feature event.

At the drop of the green flag, Hirst maintained position as cars settled in during the first five laps.  With a yellow flag coming out at the races halfway point, the Roth Enterprise/HR Livestock Transportation entry lined up 7th and quickly moved into the 3rd position after taking the 83 machine to the top of turns 1 & 2.  The yellow would once again slow the cars as Hirst settled into third.  The restart again saw Hirst drive his car hard into turn 1 to take over second behind race leader Sean Becker.  A late race caution would give Hirst a shot at Becker with a few laps remaining, but the outside starting spot proved to be a disadvantage as Rico Abreu was able to capitalize by taking over second from Hirst.  Abreu would go onto win, with Becker finishing second.  “The outside lane just wasn’t the place to restart”, stated Hirst who was pleased with his 3rd place finish.

Saturday night saw a strong showing for the KWS-NARC Fujitsu Racing Series as 41 entries took part in the 410 portion of the Peter Murphy Classic finale.

With the high car count, the format would call out for split qualifying.  This would put Hirst in Group 2 with a 7th place qualifying effort.  Starting on the pole of Heat #3, Hirst would capitalize on the front row starting spot and go onto win his heat. The Pole Shuffle event saw Hirst go out in the first round, giving himself an 11th place starting position.  The A-Main event saw the Roth team with a tight race car as Hirst struggled to maintain position.  As the fuel load burned off, Hirst was finally able to move forward and gain position one at a time until the checkered flag flew.  Hirst would end up with a sixth place result.

Roth Motorsports and Jeff Gardner teamed up to participate in the USAC 360 non-wing event during the Saturday night portion of the P.M.C.  Driving his first non-wing event of the year, Kyle Hirst entered the evening as the “underdog” and came out with a victory in the A-Main event.

The Roth Motorsports team would like to thank Roth Enterprises, HR Livestock Transportation, Roth Investments, 3H Cattle, FK Rod Ends, Weld Wheels, Brown and Miller Racing Solutions, Kent Performance and Astro Titanium for their support in 2017.
